Health and Safety Policy for Storage Cann Hall
Storage Cann Hall is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for employees, contractors, customers and visitors. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across our storage facilities and removal operations, including packing, loading, transportation and unloading activities.
Policy Statement
We recognise our duty to prevent injury and ill health arising from our work activities. We aim to identify hazards, assess risks and put in place sensible measures to control those risks. Health and safety considerations form an integral part of planning and delivering our storage and removal services.
All managers, employees and contractors are required to follow this policy, cooperate with health and safety arrangements and take reasonable care of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Storage Cann Hall rests with senior management, who ensure that appropriate resources, procedures and supervision are in place. They are responsible for setting objectives, monitoring performance and reviewing this policy on a regular basis.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for the day-to-day implementation of this policy. They must ensure that staff understand health and safety requirements, receive suitable training and use equipment and facilities correctly and safely.
All employees have a duty to:
Attend required training and follow instructions and procedures provided for their safety.
Use equipment, vehicles and handling aids in accordance with training and manufacturer guidance.
Report hazards, incidents, near misses and defective equipment as soon as they are identified.
Cooperate with accident investigations and workplace inspections.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Storage Cann Hall conducts risk assessments for its storage and removal activities. This includes assessments for manual handling, vehicle movements, loading and unloading operations, working at height when accessing vehicles or racking, and the use of mechanical handling equipment.
Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and are communicated to relevant staff. These are reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes to work practices, equipment or premises.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core part of our removal and storage operations. To reduce the risk of injury, Storage Cann Hall:
Provides training in correct lifting and carrying techniques.
Encourages the use of trolleys, dollies and other handling aids whenever reasonably practicable.
Plans jobs to avoid unnecessary lifting, twisting or carrying over long distances.
Assesses heavy or awkward items individually and assigns enough staff or mechanical assistance to move them safely.
Vehicles, Driving and On-Road Safety
Removal vehicles, vans and any other road-going vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition. Drivers must hold the correct licence, follow company driving procedures and comply with road traffic laws.
Loading and unloading of vehicles is carried out in a controlled manner. Loads must be distributed evenly and secured to prevent movement during transit. Access to loading areas is managed to avoid pedestrians entering vehicle manoeuvring zones wherever possible.
Storage Facilities and Housekeeping
Our storage areas are arranged to promote safe movement of people and goods. Aisles and access routes are kept clear, floors are maintained to reduce the risk of slips and trips, and lighting is provided at appropriate levels in all operational areas.
Storage units, racking and shelving are used within their specified capacity limits. Items are stacked securely, with heavier goods stored at lower levels where practicable. Hazardous or prohibited items are not accepted into storage in line with company rules.
Equipment and Maintenance
Work equipment, including trolleys, lifting aids and any mechanical devices, must be suitable for their intended purpose and properly maintained. Defects or damage must be reported immediately and the equipment taken out of use until it is repaired or replaced.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate equipment such as pallet trucks, lifts or other mechanical handling aids.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Cann Hall maintains fire safety arrangements appropriate to the nature of its premises and activities. This includes suitable fire detection and alarm systems, clear escape routes and fire-fighting equipment.
Emergency procedures cover fire, accidents, spills, structural issues and other significant incidents. Staff receive instruction on how to respond in an emergency and how to assist customers and visitors to evacuate safely when required.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive induction training that includes health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures and safe working practices relevant to storage and removal operations. Additional role-specific training is provided where necessary.
Information on risks and controls is communicated through briefings, signage and written procedures. Supervisors monitor working practices and provide guidance and support to ensure that standards are maintained.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences within Storage Cann Hall facilities, or during removal activities, must be reported promptly through internal reporting channels.
Investigations are carried out to identify immediate and underlying causes. Findings are used to improve procedures, update risk assessments and prevent similar events from occurring in the future.
Occupational Health and Wellbeing
Storage Cann Hall recognises that work can impact both physical and mental health. We aim to manage workloads sensibly, encourage early reporting of health concerns and support staff who may be recovering from injury or illness.
Where work may involve particular physical demands, such as repetitive lifting, we seek to rotate tasks where practical and provide guidance on pacing and safe working postures.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We encourage open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions on how to make our storage and removal operations safer.
This policy is reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains suitable and effective. Changes in work practices, legislation, technology and industry standards are taken into account to support continual improvement in our health and safety performance.
Policy Implementation
This Health and Safety policy applies to all Storage Cann Hall activities, including storage services, removal work and associated administration. Compliance with this policy is a condition of employment and a key part of delivering safe, reliable services to our customers.
